S3 Prosavage DDR crashes windows XP

I have recently purchased a computer with these specs

ECS L7VMM2 Motherboard with AMD Athlon 1900+
256MB Ram, 80GB Hard drive, with the built in S3 Prosavage DDR chip for graphics.

I have installed windows XP from a clean install and fresh format (no service pack 1) first thing i do when i install is to install all the motherboard drivers such as IDE drivers, PCI drivers, sounds, lan, etc. But no matter what i do, everytime i install the graphics drivers for the Prosavage DDR chip the computer will restart when it loads up (crashes and restarts on the XP welcome screen).

Ive downloaded the latest drivers for the graphics card but they just cause the same problem.

Ive reinstalled windows XP, installed service pack 1 then installed the graphics drivers but still get the same problem.

I did install windows 98 and the graphics drivers and there was no problem whatsoever, it worked perfectly.

So all i can assume is that the hardware is fine and this is a problem somewhere with XP.

I have no idea whats wrong with it, if anyone could help out i would greatly appreciate it.

hi,

try installing the latest version of direct X, or download the latest ProSavage drivers from www.s3graphics.com or www.driverguide.com

also, always ensure that the speed(Mhz) of your RAM is running at the same speed of your cpu fsb.

regards

also, try getting the latest motherboards drivers from your motherboards manufaturer's website. aespecially your motherboard agp drivers.

regards

I was having the same problem.. when ever i had Direct x running when i am playing a game or somethin the computer crashes and says its beginning phyiscal memory dump? i am using the prosavage ddr as well so maybe it does have soemthing to do with that... that computer runs fine and doesnt crash if i turn of dx does anyone know whats wrong with it? how much physical memory is the prosavage ddr supposed to have? cause it says i only have 226 but i tihnk i started with 256 and maybe tht is takeing it down? i duno

Me too. The prosavage uses a certain amount of RAM (you can specify how much in the BIOS) rather than having its own, so that's why your memory seems to have gone down Steve. It's normal.

I have just installed my latest motherboard drivers (Via hyperion drivers) but the latest version of S3's drivers give me exactly what you're describing, the blue screen and memory dump at after the windows xp splash screen.

Did you guys figure out what was causing this? I have been seeing this screen very occasionally anyway and was hoping this new driver would cure it, not make it worse!!

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi guys, the problem is not Windows XP but the driver. These guys at Via Tech are actually quite new, I had the same problem. luckily one of my friends had an earlier version of the driver, (VIA service pack 4.2 or something like this) and with this it worked. i had put the latest driver and got the same result as you guys. so this is it. simply those guys at Via dont have the hang of it yet.

i have recently bought a game( battle for middle earth two) for my windows xp professional but i couldnt play it. i went to the system requirements and it sais that my display memory was only 32.0 and the game requires 64. what should i do?
